It’s September and it is the season for starting something new. We are happy to welcome new students to our home… Energie EnCorps. Upon arriving for the first time, sometimes visitors are surprised to see that our studio HAS NO MIRRORS. There is a reason for this…
At Energie EnCorps we believe that living a healthy lifestyle begins with working from the INSIDE. What does that mean exactly? It means that the first thing we need to focus on is FEELING GOOD. The rest will follow… Smile. Laugh. Connect with the people around you. Noticing how your body feels when it starts to move, get stronger and more open. Be mindful and notice what the sensation of happiness is… What does it feel like? Is your breath deeper? Do you feel more mobile and free?
Without mirrors, the focus turns more inwards and away from what one looks like or what others look like. We encourage you to try to detach, or let go of the distractions of our “monkey mind”. The mind that becomes fixated on things like appearance and expectations. Our eyes sometimes focus or attach, to things like what we want or what we would like to have or what we want to do. We may get distracted and begin to compare ourselves to others, or notice the clock at the back of the room, allowing our minds to move away from the present moment to where we need to be… causing stress and anxiety… and the list goes on.
Having no mirrors also helps our teachers to connect to our students better, instead of having their back turned to you as they look at themselves. Whether the teacher is teaching a yoga , a zumba or a fitness class, our teachers will always face you, this way they can see your expression and smile at you when you need that extra encouragement. Facing the class as a teacher is a much tougher skill to learn, but we foster this as it also removes the teacher’s focus on themselves and towards their students, allowing them to offer corrections, make adjustments, motivate and really be there for YOU.
Energie EnCorps is dedicated to bringing the philosophy of yoga off the mat and into our daily lives. We envision our community cultivating the art of mindfulness, positive intentions, non-judgement, and self-awareness. Our studio integrates this by encouraging our members to take one breath at a time, honoring our today.
This attitude of kindness towards oneself and others, “no-harm” is the primordial yoga philosophy called “ahimsa”. This principle is brought forward in all of the various workshops and activities that we offer at our studio. This understanding is what brings our team together, from the teachers, nutritionist, osteopath, massage therapist, personal trainer and guest speakers… this is what we want to share with you.
Yes, we have no mirrors… it seems strange… but there is a whole story behind that. And we promise, if you start to feel good at the studio… you will want more of it. And that “it”… will be the yoga, the zumba, the fitness, etc… You will begin to want more of that awesome sensation and you will start to care more about what you eat, take care of the little inbalances that you now will have time to notice, because you are less distracted… and you will start to be curious about bodywork, like therapy balls, massage or osteopathy. You will want to take better care of yourself and perhaps start to detox your life and move away from chemicals and maybe use essential oils and possibly eat greener and cleaner. You will begin to shine and the people around you will feel it. It is a happy kind of contagious…. It is a whole progression. But, it is one baby step at a time…
